How did they meet?

Well, in 2014 as the first rehearsal of the University of Victoria Chamber Singers was about to begin, Julia noodled at the piano while Zach walked into the room. It was not love at first sight. In fact, they didn’t talk for several weeks, possibly months. Despite these initial hurdles they eventually became very good friends, enjoying shared classes and rehearsals, goofing around, going for hikes, and cheesy pull-a-part bread. They also became known around the school of music for their excellent high-fives.

Their relationship began to evolve into a romantic one in 2017, and for the first few months mostly consisted of Julia writing a poem onto a piece of paper, shoving it into Zach’s hands before he started leading a ghost tour downtown, and then running away. Their first date was at the BC Museum in downtown Victoria, although both were much too shy to hold hands.

From camping trips on the gulf islands to attending concerts and shows together, from picnics in local parks to road trips around BC and Seattle, they’ve shared a lot of happy memories and are excited for all the ones to come. They got engaged in July of 2020 at the top of Mt Warburton Pike on Saturna Island, the very spot of their first hike as friends and again later of their first kiss. Now, they’ll be married on Denman Island at a home belonging to some of Julia’s family’s friends at which she spent many lovely summer weekends growing up. Then, after a honeymoon traveling from Nova Scotia to PEI, Quebec, and Ontario (often by train!), they’ll return to teaching in Salmon Arm.
